How to limit access to your personal information

Tips to protect yourself online (2/3)

Following our first cyber security article on how to protect your devices, here’s some advice for protecting your personal information.

Use strong passwords

This may seem obvious to some of you, but there are still too many people who aren’t careful about the passwords they use for their online accounts. These passwords must be hard to guess, but easy to remember, and unique for each site. This way, if a website’s security is compromised and your password ends up in the hands of cyber criminals, they won’t be able to access any of your other accounts. Coming up with lots of different passwords is hard, but the Canadian Bankers Association website offers several tips to help you out.1 Take advantage of multifactor authentication (two-step security) as well when it’s available.

Never give out your personal information

Remember that your bank will never contact you to ask for personal information like your credit card number, your PIN, or the password for your online account. In case of doubt, contact your bank using an electronic address or telephone number that you know is legitimate.2

These few measures will help you better protect your personal and financial information and make cyber security a good new habit.
